작품설명
미국의 독립선언문에는 다음과 같은 문구가 있다. ‘모든 사람은 평등하게 태어났고, 창조주는 몇 개의 양도할 수 없는 권리를 부여했으며, 그 권리 중에는 생명과 자유와 행복의 추구가 있다’. 작가는 공공미술이 보편적인 메시지를 담아야 하며, 아름다움과 진실됨, 그리고 선한 것들에 대한 이야기여야 한다는 믿음으로 작품활동을 전개하고 있다. 조각을 구성하는 ‘나무’는 인간과 가장 친근한 자연물이자 오랫동안 창작의 재료로 사용되어 왔다. 작가는 인물의 형태를 구성하는 수십 개의 나무조각들이 개개인의 삶을 의미한다고 생각하며, 하나의 조각을 완성하는 과정을 통해 함께 어울리는 행복한 인간세상을 기원한다. 그는 삶의 형태와 문화가 다른 한국에서도 ‘행복의 추구’라는 인간의 보편적 가치를 담아내고자 한다.

About
The Declaration of Independence of the United States reads as follows: “… all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness…” The artist believes that public art should convey the universal message, and it should be a story about beauty, truthfulness, and good things of the world. His primary material for a long time is wood, which is the most familiar natural object to human. Brouwer implies that the dozens of wood pieces consisting of the human figure signify the life of every human being, and he hopes for the happy and harmonious world through the work process. He captures the universal value of human, the pursuit of happiness, in his work in Korea where the culture differs from his own country.
